Our experts at Wine {Domaine} are always happy to share their knowledge, ensuring you won’t get a better experience buying whisky in Geelong.

A many-faceted drink, whisky’s world-renowned decadent flavours are created by the fermented grain mash at its core. Grains used include barley, rye, corn (maize) and wheat, and can be malted – as in the highly regarded single malt Scotch whisky.

Whisky, or whiskey as it’s also sometimes called, has often been a source of confusion. Most experts agree the spelling is largely a regional preference – Ireland and the US commonly use ‘whiskey’, while the remainder of the whisky-producing world uses the more common ‘whisky’. The nomenclature also features variations based on both production location and ingredients, including:

  • Scotch whisky is made from malted barley, and exclusively in Scotland. There are strict laws regarding the ingredients and production methods of Scotch whisky, including that it must be aged in oak casks for at least three years.
  • Irish whiskey must be made in Ireland, although the regulations around production are slightly looser.
  • Rye whiskey is most widely associated with the USA and Canada. The regulations are different per country, but the USA designates the fermented mash must contain at minimum 51% rye or malted rye.
  • Bourbon whisky is exclusive to the USA. It must be made using a mash comprised of at least 51% corn (maize).
